Debra Maricic is an emerging contemporary painter exploring the luminous and fleeting nature of the living world. Raised along the coasts of Rhode Island and Maine, her work is rooted in an early and enduring reverence for the natural world. She studied fine arts at the University of Rhode Island and furthered her practice abroad in Italy, where she focused on painting.
Drawing subtly from the visual language of natural history, as well as literature, symbolism, and folklore, her work echoes the precision and curiosity of archival imagery—reimagined through a contemporary lens. Within her paintings, unlikely juxtapositions emerge: objects, figures, and moments that resist conventional coexistence take form as if drawn from an internal, dreamlike field of vision.
Her paintings move through themes of spirituality, symbolism, and the unseen connections that universally bind living things. Working primarily in paint, she embraces its fluidity and uncertainty—each piece an act of presence and surrender. Refined compositions are often punctuated by luminous elements, including metal leaf and celestial orbs, evoking energy, balance, and a sense of the sacred.
She resides along the Navesink area of NJ; her recent work draws from the surrounding farm and its fauna, offering ephemeral moments of stillness, reflection, and quiet wonder.
